Blog: Best Movie Musicals of All Time...For Those Brave Enough to Choose

There are so many movie musicals out there and many of them have us wanting to grab some popcorn right now and jump on the couch for a toe-tapping movie marathon. But which are the best movie musicals of all time?! Well, to be honest, that is too tough to call so we have picked some of our favourites to share with you, have made a list of some of the ones we haven't yet seen that we would most like to see and then, we would love for you to finish off the list by commenting below (or on this post on instagram) to tell us your favourite Movie Musicals too! We can't wait to hear your suggestions...in the meantime, here are ours (in no particular order):

The Sound of Music (1965)

This is my personal fav just because of all the nostalgia that surrounds this movie for me. I've even been to Austria to go on the Sound of Music Tour...it was so great =).

Hairspray (2007)

Whilst not a patch on the stage production, this is, in my opinion, one of the best movie musicals of late - I love the music, the message, the story, the character developments...everything about this one really! I would love to see a Broadway revival really soon of this one!

The King and I (1956)

I was raised on this film as it has been one of my mum's favourites since she saw Yul Brenner himself perform the role of the King on Broadway. I'll forever be a fan of it thanks to her...and to Kelli O'Hara's recent rendition of Anna.

Grease (1978)

Is this not the most quintessential movie musical?! It's the perfect feel good and if you've never seen it you need to and if you haven't seen it in a long time...it's time for a rewatch!

Chicago (2002)

One of the rare cases where I probably even like the movie more than the stage show...but really, I love both when it comes to Chicago! It's so good!!

Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

On my things to do list: go to a midnight screening of Rocky Horror with all the props. Friends - I need to do this like really really soon please!

Cabaret (1972)

Oh Sally Bowles...is there a more iconic movie musical character than you? Another one of my absolute favs!

Fiddler on the Roof (1971)

I'd be lying if I said this was on my personal top 10 list HOWEVER it may be because I have just seen it way too many times! This movie is iconic as far as a movie musical goes and it's a great one...especially if you're of Jewish heritage...then it's a must watch immediately situation.

Mary Poppins (1964)

Great film anyway but the dance sequence in Step in Time means that this movie needs to forever be on the best movie musical list.

West Side Story (1961)

Some of the most famous choreography known to man! This wouldn't be my personal favourite but it is a classic for a reason - personally, I prefer the film to the stage show.

The Wizard of Oz (1939)

The first musical I fell in love with and all because of this movie. I have been obsessed with Dorothy since I was a little girl and I hope that my fascination with the magic of the red slippers and the magic of musical theatre never dwindles from that childhood enthusiasm.

Dreamgirls (2006)

This movie was so great when it came out and I must admit, I still love it! How many times have you seen it? If you answered less than 10, it's time to rewatch =).

The Greatest Showman (2017)

The greatest new movie musical - this was a showstopper!

Sister Act/Sister Act 2 (1992 & 1993)

I mean, come on....Whoopi is perfection and the movie is great....what more do you need?

Rent (2005)

I'll wait whilst you count how many times you've seen this one too...my record is 11 times...in a 10 day period...what can I say?! It's Idina...it's Rent...it's perfect!

42nd Street (1933)

This one is all about the dancing! It's been a long time since I last watched it...I'll have to rewatch this one soon!

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971)

Absolute classic! If you're going to watch Willy Wonka though, make sure it is this version, there is no Wonka like Gene Wilder...born for the role!

On Our List To Watch:

These are some that we either have never seen or haven't seen for so long that we felt really wanted to rewatch them in the coming months. What would make your list?

Cinderella (1997)

Once (2007)

Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)

Funny Girl (1968)

The Wiz (1978)

Little Shop of Horrors (1986)

Singing in the Rain (1952)

Hair (1979)

Pennies From Heaven (1981)

South Pacific (1958)

Holiday Inn (1942)

Show Boat (1936)

Meet Me in St Louis (1944)

For Your Opinion:

Okay, these are ones that we would love to know your opinion on...did you love them or hate them?!

La La Land (2016)

I'm personally yet to see this one but Rosie...she is not a fan!

An American in Paris (1951)

This one is a classic but you have to be a dance fan to get through it or it can feel really slow. Personally I enjoyed it's old school charm and loved the dance. What did you think?

Mamma Mia (2008)

Okay, I have to admit, I am such a fan! I love ABBA and I love this cast so I don't care if they can't all sing (I'm looking at the men for that one...), this movie is just happiness and makes me smile every time I watch it (or the sequel)

Cats (2019)

Haven't watched it...probably never will. I just can't.

Into the Woods (2014)

Another movie I am yet to see...will need to get on this quick smart!

Les Miserables (2012)

My opinion...it could have been so good but it wasn't. Sorry if you loved it! I'll personally be sticking to the stage show for this one
