Review: The White Mermaid or The Little Lotus: A Musical Fable at The Seymour Centre

Review by Nola Bartolo

If you want to have a laugh, like rolling down the aisle’s laughter then The White Mermaid or the Little Lotus: A Musical Fable is one to get yourselves to quick smart. From the team that brought you Moulin Scrooge! This show is a fabulous aquatic fantasy for adults only!  In this crazy world that we live in, this is a musical parody that will have you leaving with a smile on your dial and probably wet undies from pissing yourselves. I know that’s a bit crass, but this is the kind of show it is. Crass, loud, hysterically funny and extremely entertaining. Prepare to be be-dazzled.

It’s such a treat as an audience member to be able to sit back and just laugh at crass jokes and not be afraid of worrying what anybody will think. The whole audience agreed. This is one comedic parody musical worth getting to. Have I said that enough?

The show is a mash up between The Little Mermaid and the White Lotus (both seasons). Trevor Ashley plays a vivacious Tania McMermaid with a perfect impersonation of Jennifer Coolidge. Oh Gawd he was good.

Tania finds solace after a recent loss and checks into the opulent and mysterious hotel, The Little Lotus. Little does she know, this will be the setting for a life-changing adventure, where destiny and love intertwine. Weaving her way through this underwater paradise, Tania's path collides with that of a handsome Italian Prince, setting the stage for a captivating romance that will leave audiences and the actors breathless.

But beware! Lurking in the shadows is the malevolent sea witch, Gaviscon (the legendary Carlotta), determined to thwart Tania's hopes and dreams. Will Tania overcome the challenges thrown her way? Will she find true love with the character formerly known as Prince? Will the evil sea witch shatter her hopes forever? Or will a live action remake kill the whole thing!?

There are so many questions, and they all get answered for you. I promise.

The cast were all sensational in their roles. The music, dancing and costumes were equally sensational. The song lyrics were clever and so very comedic. Honestly, I have to say that my favourite line in the whole show and I was hoping to hear it at some stage was “These Gays are trying to murder me” but it is changed ever so slightly and adapted to the underwater version. You will know when you hear it. Wouldn’t want to spoil the rapturous laughter that will ensue.

Don’t miss this one. I am now a new fan of the very talented Trevor Ashley and will now make sure that I don’t ever miss his annual musical parodies.

The White Mermaid or The Little Lotus is playing at The Seymour Center till Dec 23. Go!
