Review: The Queens of Sass at Connections Nightclub

Review by Tatum Stafford

Right out the gate, the cast of The Queens of Sass were high energy, high sass, and highly entertaining. Strutting across the stage to Anastacia’s iconic ‘I’m Outta Love’ in stunning red outfits, the queens came out in force and had an appropriately vocal and hype audience waiting for them.

This is Sassie Cassie’s solo producing debut, and she has coordinated an absolutely fantastic line-up of local drag talent for this show. Sassie has plenty of moments to shine; showcasing her vocals on a sultry cover of ‘Fever’ and lightning-quick lip-syncing talents on ‘Show Me How You Burlesque’ by Christina Aguilera.

The line-up included a super fun number and reveal by Miss Cara, a high-energy performance by Veronica Jean Jones, energetic choreo from Moesha, and an iconic Taylor Swift mash-up by Alexas Armstrong. Throw in the guest performer for the evening, the iconic BarbieQ with a high-energy Madison Avenue number, and the audience were absolutely lapping up this talented group of performers.

Sassie is confident and charming on the mic, and the show’s structure gave her plenty of opportunities to chat about her relationships with the queens in the show, including queens that she admired before she started doing drag. This was a really nice touch amongst the incredible performances, and gave us a really wholesome insight into her drag career so far.

The show’s finale number was incredibly choreographed, and saw BarbieQ join the cast for a showstopping closer, ‘Pound the Alarm’ by Nicki Minaj. I can’t wait to see the future shows Sassie has in store, as this was easily the most entertaining drag show I’ve seen at Connections in the past few Fringe seasons.
