Review: The 27 Club at the Sydney Spiegeltent

Review by Nola Bartolo

If you're a rock 'n' roll fan in Sydney, "The 27 Club" is a must-see show at the Spiegeltent. Running from August 30th to September 29th, 2024, this performance is a high-octane tribute to the legendary artists who left us too soon, such as Janis Joplin, Amy Winehouse, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, and Jimi Hendrix.

The intimate setting of the Spiegeltent's House of Mirrors sets the perfect stage for this electrifying show. With its booths, small tables, and standing room, the venue transports you to a club in 1970s New York or an '80s nightclub in LA or London. The moment you step inside, you’re enveloped in the world of Rock 'n' Roll.

This isn't just another gig; it’s a high-voltage love letter to these musical icons, brought to life by some of Australia's rock royalty: Sarah McLeod, Carla Lippis, Dusty Lee Stephensen, and Justin Burford. The show delivers a raw, authentic energy that honours these legends. Each performer shines, with standout moments including Sarah McLeod's electrifying vocals, Carla Lippis's dynamic presence, Dusty Lee Stephensen's energetic guitar work, and Justin Burford's remarkable portrayal of Kurt Cobain.

These artists are all truly remarkable as individuals, but when you bring them together, you get a night of Rock 'n' Roll like no other. McLeod’s powerful renditions of Janis Joplin’s hits had the audience dancing and fully immersed in the experience. Lippis, dubbed ‘the Satanic Liza Minnelli,’ was a standout with her raw, playful, and commanding stage presence, moving seamlessly from Jimi Hendrix to Amy Winehouse with both drama and comedy. Stephensen’s high-energy performance, blending funky guitars, soul, and disco, brought the house down, especially during his Jim Morrison numbers. And Burford—what can I say? Closing my eyes, I could swear I was hearing Kurt Cobain himself. His portrayal was hauntingly authentic.

The show has been rightfully lauded by critics, earning many stars in reviews for its relentless energy and pure rock bliss. If you're in Sydney, don't miss out on this unique tribute. "The 27 Club" is more than just a concert; it's a masterclass in Rock 'n' Roll that will leave you on your feet and craving more.
