Touring circuit veterans and straight from Festival Off Avignon, Edinburgh Fringe now experiences the joyful sensation that is “Church of the Clitori”. The High Priestess of the Church of the Clitori and her faithful Labia invite you to get baptised – clitorally. Who could refuse such an offer? The dynamic duo Lillian Rodrigues Pang and Malika Reese are at an age where there isn’t much they haven’t seen or experienced. “Church of the Clitori” isn’t some flippant clit-bait of a show – sure, it is late night, and who knows exactly what might have attracted this crowd. It’s fun, informative and jumps off, in and around age old issues of identity, sexuality, representation and of course religion. Our labial ladies of clitoral communion are dressed in layers of pink that float across the stage but would look splendid on the red carpet. They’ve dressed up. This signals an important night ahead!
The show comprises reworded songs to give them a clitoral edge for example “He’s got the Whole Clit in his Hands”, anatomic drawings (fabulous as projections in a venue that can provide this), detailed history and little-known medical information.
It is a confident knee slapper of a show that offers a door to sexual liberation via religious repression all delivered with the firm hand of a professional! And yes, there is audience interaction – we tentatively join in the songs to begin but end the show bathed in the light of enlightenment and love. You are in safe hands here – these ladies will not mess you around on the participation front! It’s spiritual, its sexual, its theatre! How do we treat our bodies and our pleasure? The show even does a deep dive into sex toys and how they “may” be unsuitable for women’s pleasure! Hilarious!!
“Church of the Clitori” is communal and inclusive. Recommended for the adventurous late-night seeker.
